What Is the Complete SSC MTS Exam Pattern & Syllabus Structure?
SSC MTS exam has two tiers: Tier 1 is a computer-based objective test with 100 questions in 90 minutes, and Tier 2 is a skill-based typing or computer proficiency test conducted after Tier 1 qualifying candidates are shortlisted. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) sets the syllabus and exam pattern for the Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) role. This structure applies to the 2024–25 recruitment cycle.
Tier 1 Exam Pattern (Objective MCQ Test)
Tier 1 is a single-shift, computer-based exam lasting 90 minutes. You will answer 100 multiple-choice questions. Each correct answer gives 1 mark; 0.25 mark is deducted for every wrong answer. The exam covers four subjects equally weighted at 25 marks each. There is no sectional time limit—you can move between subjects freely.
| Subject | Number of Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Awareness | 25 | 25 | 90 minutes (total) |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 25 | 25 | |
| English Language & Comprehension | 25 | 25 | |
| Reasoning Ability | 25 | 25 | |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
Tier 2 Exam Pattern (Skill Test)
Tier 2 is a qualifying skill test, not a marks-based exam. Candidates who clear Tier 1 cutoff are called for Tier 2. The test is either a Typing Test (for Hindi and English) or a Computer-Based Skill Test (CBST), depending on the post. For typing, you must type 8,000 characters in 15 minutes in English or 8,000 characters in 15 minutes in Hindi. For CBST, you must demonstrate basic computer skills like word processing and spreadsheet handling. You must qualify (not fail) but marks do not add to your final score.
How Tier 1 and Tier 2 Work Together
- You take Tier 1 (objective test) first. SSC announces a cutoff score based on category and number of vacancies.
- If you score at or above the cutoff, you are shortlisted for Tier 2.
- You appear for Tier 2 skill test. If you qualify, your name enters the final merit list.
- Final selection is based on Tier 1 marks only; Tier 2 is pass/fail.
According to the SSC notification for MTS recruitment, "Tier 1 is the main qualifying examination, and Tier 2 is a skill-based test to assess job-readiness." This means your Tier 1 performance decides your rank, and Tier 2 simply confirms you can do the job's basic tasks.
You can download the official SSC MTS syllabus PDF in Hindi and English from ssc.nic.in. The syllabus document lists all topics under each subject and is released with the official notification before the exam notification window opens.

SSC MTS Exam Pattern and Syllabus: What You'll Face
SSC MTS Exam Pattern and Syllabus: What You'll Face
SSC MTS has two tiers: Tier 1 is a 90-minute computer-based test with 100 multiple-choice questions (1 mark each, 0.25 mark deducted for wrong answers); Tier 2 is a descriptive paper (essay, letter, application) added only for candidates who clear Tier 1. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts this exam annually to fill Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) posts in various government ministries and departments.
Tier 1 Subjects and Weightage
Tier 1 tests four subjects equally. Each subject carries 25 questions:
- General Awareness (25 Q): Current affairs, history, geography, polity, science, sports. No fixed weightage—questions vary by exam cycle.
- Quantitative Aptitude (25 Q): Arithmetic (30%), Geometry and Mensuration (20%), Algebra (15%), Data Interpretation (15%), Number System (10%), Trigonometry (10%).
- English Language (25 Q): Reading Comprehension (40%), Vocabulary (20%), Grammar (20%), Sentence Correction (20%).
- Reasoning (25 Q): Verbal Reasoning (40%), Non-Verbal Reasoning (30%), Analytical Reasoning (30%).
Tier 2 (Descriptive Paper)
Candidates who qualify Tier 1 sit for Tier 2, a 30-minute paper worth 50 marks. You write one essay (250 words) or one letter/application (150–200 words) in English or Hindi. SSC uses this to test writing ability; marks are added to Tier 1 score for final merit list.
Marking Scheme
- Correct answer: +1 mark
- Wrong answer: −0.25 mark
- Unanswered: 0 mark
- Total Tier 1 marks: 100
- Total Tier 2 marks: 50 (if you clear Tier 1)
What's Tested Most in SSC MTS Tier 1
According to SSC notifications, Arithmetic and Reading Comprehension dominate. Candidates typically see 8–10 questions on profit-loss, percentages, time-work, and simple/compound interest. Reading passages often carry 10–12 questions. Reasoning focuses on analogy, classification, and series—topics that repeat every cycle. General Awareness is unpredictable but favours recent events and static GK (capitals, awards, constitutional facts).

SSC MTS Exam Pattern & Question Paper Structure (2019–2023 Changes)
SSC MTS Exam Pattern & Question Paper Structure (2019–2023 Changes)
SSC MTS exam pattern has shifted from pen-and-paper to fully computer-based testing (CBT) and added new sections, making recent papers harder than 2019 ones. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) restructured the Tier-1 format in 2021 and introduced changes to Tier-2 descriptive tasks. Understanding these 5-year shifts helps you pick the right papers for practice and set realistic difficulty expectations.
Tier-1 Format Changes (2019–2023):
In 2019, SSC MTS Tier-1 was a 90-minute pen-and-paper test with 100 questions across four sections: General Awareness, Reasoning, Numerical Ability, and English. From 2021 onwards, SSC moved to a 90-minute CBT (Computer-Based Test) format with the same four sections but stricter negative marking (0.25 marks per wrong answer). The number of questions remained 100, but the difficulty of Reasoning and Numerical Ability questions increased noticeably after 2021, according to SSC official notifications on ssc.nic.in.
Tier-2 Descriptive Changes:
Tier-2 remained a 30-minute written test, but the task type shifted. In 2019–2020, candidates wrote essays or letters. From 2021, SSC introduced a single descriptive task (essay, letter, or application) worth 50 marks, with stricter grammar and vocabulary evaluation. This made Tier-2 more competitive because fewer candidates qualify from Tier-1, raising the bar for those who reach Tier-2.
